The Science

Enhanced External Counter Pulsation has been around for over 50 years and is now becoming increasingly popular. In recent years, EECP has received FDA Approval, as well as being approved and licensed by Health Canada for the treatment of angina, congestive heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and heart attacks. Now the paradigm is shifting away from invasive procedures towards safer, non-invasive therapies such as EECP.

When your heart works better, everything works better.

There are hundreds of peer reviewed scientific papers supporting the fact that EECP works.

EECP Therapy has been shown to have the following subjective benefits (supporting research articles linked for reference):

  • Increased blood flow to the coronary arteries, and decreased workload of the heart (Similar to the mechanism of an intra-aortic balloon pump)

  • Stimulate the release of growth factor hormones (like VEG-F), which can promote angiogenesis (the growth of collateral blood vessels around narrowed ones) "Natural Bypasses"

  • Stimulate the increased release of the hormone Nitric Oxide, which opens up and relaxes arteries, resulting in lowered blood pressure, and more flexible arteries

  • Decrease in frequency and severity of angina

  • Increase in exercise tolerance/improvement of cardiovascular fitness

Possibly due to the increase in blood flow as a result of EECP Therapy, some of our patients have reported the following additional improvements during their course of treatment:

  • Improvement in diabetic related symptoms (including neuropathy)

  • Lower, and more stable blood sugar levels

  • Increase in energy levels

  • Increased sleep, and sleep quality

  • Decrease in heart rate

  • Decrease in joint pain and inflammation due to arthritis/gout

  • Reduced muscle pain from lactic acid build-up following exercise (When therapy is done following exercise)
